Curriculum Overview

The middle school health education classes for the 2015-2016 school year will focus on Nutrition and Sexual Health/Puberty. For the first ten weeks of the Nutrition unit, some of the main topics covered were: what being healthy means, components of health, food groups, reading food labels, why we eat/ what influences us to eat what we eat, the Digestive system, and taking a look at what other countries eat through the curriculum, The Hungry Planet. Currently, we have just finished our first unit in semester 2. This means the Nutrition unit is coming to a quick close and we are ready to begin Sexual Health/ Puberty. A letter has been emailed and sent home with a more descriptive summary of what topics will be covered. In general, topics include: internet safety and sharing, body changes, hormones, and healthy vs. non-healthy relationships, effective communication, and for 8th grade: reproduction/ STI's. On the panel to the right, there are unit overviews, and a week-by-week glance of what we will be discussing. Please feel free to take a look!

If you would like to exempt your child from the lessons based around anatomy and reproduction and/or sexuality (beginning 6th week of the unit), please notify me , Kelly Kyles, at kkyles@innovationcharter.org no later than April 28, 2016.
