Veterans Day

posted Nov 12, 2015, 6:17 AM by Erik Arnold
I hope everyone had a pleasant Veterans Day yesterday. Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and it's first occurrence was on November 11, 1919. One year earlier, all fighting had ceased on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month and Armistice Day was created to commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers during The Great War (WWI). As we had more wars during the 20th century, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor veterans from all of the wars. For a short time, Veterans Day was actually moved from the 11th to a Monday in order to create a long weekend. Many people did not support this change of date, however, and in 1975 President Ford signed a bill that would return Veterans Day to the 11th. As stated on the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs website (http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp), "...the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good."

Thank you to all of our veterans that are part of the IACS community and across the country.
