Radiation Presentation by UMASS Lowell Students

posted Jan 8, 2016, 11:59 AM by Erik Arnold
This week we had two students from UMASS Lowell give a presentation on radiation to our Chemistry students. Andrew Najjar of the Health Physics Society at UMASS Lowell and Danielle Sampson: Undergraduate of Chemical Engineering: Nuclear Option and the UML American Nuclear Society President gave the presentation.  The presentation was on the basics of radiation/nuclear reactions, how nuclear reactors work, and how radiation is used in the medical industry and research. They also brought in a radiation detector and some radioactive sources to demonstrate some different types of radiation. Not to worry though, the radioactive sources they brought were very low level, one such source was actually a common household smoke detector. Thank you to Mrs. Derival for arranging the visit.
