Course Overview

Narrative is “a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.” In this course, students will explore narrative as tradition of a variety of disciplines throughout art history. Students will learn about artists that use narration, and the traditions of narration in various art forms. They will learn about illustrative narrative by adapting texts into sequential artworks, documentary narrative through photographic series, and fictional narrative through short film. Students will experiment with a variety of mediums and materials, and develop skills related to composition, narrative arc, pacing, clarity, and purpose as they explore different aspects of narrative.
