Math 150/160

Course Overview

Course Summary

In this course, you will deepen your understanding and mastery of topics introduced in Algebra/Geometry.  You will use rigorous mathematical reasoning to apply the skills we learn in class to problems drawn from the real world.  You will also practice communicating your understanding and conclusions clearly and completely—a skill critical to applying math outside the classroom. Taking notes will be crucial to your success, and you will practice this skill as well.  This course is designed to give students a solid understanding of the concepts, reasoning, and skills needed to be successful in Algebra II.

As a class, we will begin this year by reviewing and resolidifying the concepts we encountered last year in algebra:  arithmetic calculation, solving algebraic equations, and using linear equations.  These skills will be applied to geometry as we explore similar triangles.  We will return to algebra and engage with functions, first as a general concept, and then focusing on quadratic and exponential functions.  Lastly, we’ll return to geometry with investigations into three-dimensional topics and transformations, with an introduction to the concept of proof.  We’ll wrap up the year with systems of linear equations.

You will need the following materials every day:

·         Pencil

·         Notebook

·         Folder or similar paper storage place

·         Completed homework

·         Agenda book
