For Tuesday, 9/8

Finish in class-writing: short scene between 2 characters from "Happy Endings" at breakfast

For Friday, 9/11
Finish in class-writing: Describe a character's room.  Don't tell us anything about the character -- show who they are ONLY through a description of their room.

For Tuesday, 9/16
Finish in class-writing (see attached assignment sheet for Character Development Exercise #2)

For Thursday, 9/17
Make a timeline of "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven"

For Friday, 9/18
Write a scene in which a character experiences an intense emotion.  Do NOT:
  • name the emotion
  • refer in any way to tears
  • use the words feel/felt

THE FIRST PACKET OF WRITING WILL BE DUE TUESDAY, 9/22.  IT MUST INCLUDE:

  • the scene w/characters from "Happy Endings"
  • the room description
  • the character development assignment (asthmatic musician & arthritic young man)
  • emotion sketch
  • "Needs" exercise (Choose one of the characters from the pieces listed above.  Put them in a desperate situation. They have to tell a story to get out of it.)

SECOND PACKET DUE TUESDAY, 10/13.  IT MUST INCLUDE:

  • 7 sentences ("I'm the kind of person who...")
  • 3 monologues ("I'm the kind of person who...")
  • scene w/ two characters who want different things
  • character/situation checklist
  • character/situation scene (if you haven't already written this, do it for hw)
  • "What if?" chart
  • "What if?" scene
    Please choose one piece that you would like feedback on.

For Thursday, 10/15
Finish writing 5 first lines of imaginary stories

For Tuesday, 10/20
Reread "The Petrified Man"
Choose one of the following questions and write a 1/2 page response.  Honors students, choose 2 questions:

1.    How does Eudora Welty show the characters
2.    What conflicts create the dramatic situation?  (In other words, what do the characters want?)
3.    What does Welty leave out of this story?
