HIGH SCHOOL WELLNESS

See a walkthrough of our low ropes course

Our students are challenged to think critically and creatively through a project based, interdisciplinary curriculum. Students learn how to effectively approach their work both individually and in teams. We ask students to actively engage in ideas and examine topics through multiple perspectives.

Our students learn to recognize the connections between academic disciplines and applications to
the outside world. Skills and concepts are not taught in isolation; students and staff collaborate to form a highly connected community of learners. We hold a belief that increased connection and collaboration in our school fosters a richer learning experience.

Our students are required to put their knowledge and skills into context through authentic project assignments. Additionally, they are expected to create and present their work publicly via oral presentations as well as on-line digital portfolios. Finally, high school students extend their learning outside the classroom through off campus experiences.

Overview
Our wellness department is helping to teach our students how to be healthy in the real world.

Through a range of activities and discussions we are teaching our students what tools they have to live a long and healthy life.

Curriculum

All students at IACS are enrolled in a full year wellness class that runs opposite the advisory block.  In these courses we offer a wide range of lifelong activities such as yoga, frisbee, and cross country skiing.  By being introduced to a wide range of activities throughout their years at IACS, we hope that each student will find enjoyment in one or multiple activities and continue them throughout their life.  In addition to physical activities all 10th grade students receive health education.  This discussion based course allows for all students to learn how to make healthy decisions on their own so they may live long happy lives.  Some of the topics covered in this course are healthy relationships, substance abuse, and sex education.

Physical Wellness Strands

Work Habits
The Work Habits strand reflects the effort students put into class each day.  This entails their level of physical participation during class, their contributions to group discussions and/or goal in certain activities, and their level of attention and respect when their teacher and classmates are speaking.

Application
Students will apply the learned knowledge in class to their daily lives.  We will have discussions over possible changes students have made in their lives based, or look to make, based on information they have learned in class.

Effective Communication
Students will express their ideas both physically and orally within different activities.  They should be an active member of any group or team they are a part of, and contribute to the success of that group’s goals.

Enduring Understanding
Students will look at the over arching questions of physical activity and how those can be applied to live a healthy lifestyle.  Among the topics explored through these understandings will include team sports, adventure activities and team building activities.  This strand will measure how effectively students demonstrate and understand the key ideas used and discussed throughout this class.
